FIFA 16 to feature women’s soccer teams.
EA announced that FIFA 16 will feature women’s soccer teams.
360 and Xbox One is going to, for the first time ever, include female teams
Though FIFA 16 will finally include female characters, they won’t be full-featured. You won’t be able to add female players to your Ultimate Team, for example.
There is a mixed reaction in gamers’ world to this. Some cheer and say that they waited for this moment for years. Others are troubled by this development. They seem genuinely not to understand that women are capable of playing both football and videogames, and enjoying both of those things – never mind that men might enjoy the women’s game too. Or kicking other men’s asses playing all-female squad against all-male.
So, how would the girls compare on the pitch? Abby Wambach is the leading international goal scorer. Breaking Mia Hamm’s 158-goal record in 2013, Wambach has now reached a staggering 182 goals scored in international matches. Each of the top six female international goal scorers have made it to the back of the net more times than the male player who holds the men’s top spot, and Canada’s Christine Sinclair is within spitting distance of being the second woman to break Hamm’s record. By comparison, Cristiano Ronaldo has scored only 52 international goals.
EA says that the inclusion of female players has been a top fan request, and that it’s been considering adding them for years but limitations of technology prevented them.
One of the big issues was realistic hair movement. Although moving hair has been available in replays for some time, getting it to move correctly in real-time hasn’t been possible during gameplay, until now.
The other stumbling block was a matter of build. Changes had to be made to the animation rig to ensure that new female players didn’t just look like women’s heads on men’s bodies.
Working with key US Women’s National Team players Wambach, Morgan, Sydney Leroux and Megan Rapinoe, EA Canada used advanced motion capture technology to ensure that the female characters look and move naturally on the virtual pitch.
